According to Bloomberg (via Gamedeveloper), Sony is reportedly in the preliminary phases of developing a portable console to rival Nintendo's Switch (and future iterations). The source is described as individuals "familiar with the matter," so this remains tentative. The project could easily be scrapped before release, as Bloomberg acknowledges.

Veteran readers may remember the PS Vita era. However, the rise of mobile gaming, coupled with the withdrawal of many competitors from the handheld market (excluding Nintendo), led Sony to believe competing with smartphones wasn't viable, despite the Vita's popularity.
