Sony Unveils teamLFG: New PlayStation Studio Crafts Team-Based Action Game Blending Fighting, MOBA, and 'Frog-Type' Elements

Sony has recently unveiled a new PlayStation studio named teamLFG, alongside a teaser for its debut game. In a post on the PlayStation Blog, Hermen Hulst, CEO of Sony Interactive Entertainment’s Studio Business Group, highlighted that teamLFG was originally formed at Bungie, the developers behind Destiny and Marathon. The studio is currently working on what Hulst described as an "ambitious" incubation project that he's eagerly anticipating.

The name teamLFG derives from the gaming term 'Looking For Group,' suggesting a strong focus on social gaming. Their first project is a team-based action game that combines elements from fighting games, platformers, MOBAs, life sims, and "frog-type games." According to teamLFG, the game will be set in a lighthearted, comedic world within a new, mythic, science-fantasy universe.

"We are driven by a mission to create games where players can find friendship, community, and belonging," teamLFG stated. The studio aims to create an environment where players are excited to log on and see their teammates already online, fostering a sense of familiarity and community. They want players to celebrate memorable moments and build lasting connections, encapsulated by their phrase – "dat’s da good stuff."

teamLFG plans to develop immersive multiplayer worlds that players can learn, play, and master over countless hours. The studio is committed to involving the community in the development process through early access playtests, ensuring they can adapt to player feedback not only before the launch but throughout the game's live service phase, fostering a growing community for years to come.

teamLFG's game is the result of an incubation project that emerged from Bungie during significant layoffs last year. Following Sony's acquisition, Bungie struggled to meet financial targets with Destiny 2, leading to layoffs in November 2023 and another round in 2024, affecting a total of 320 employees. Amidst these changes, 155 employees were integrated into other roles within Sony Interactive Entertainment, and the incubation project was spun off to form teamLFG.

Last year, a former Bungie lawyer praised Sony's involvement in improving the live service looter shooter Destiny 2. Since then, Bungie has fully revealed the extraction shooter Marathon and outlined the future roadmap for Destiny 2. However, there are no plans for Destiny 3, and a spinoff project called Payback has been canceled.
