Blizzard Entertainment is reportedly in talks with several prominent Korean game studios, all vying to develop new titles under the iconic *StarCraft* franchise. According to a report highlighted by the X (formerly Twitter) account @KoreaXboxnews and originally published by Asia Today, four major South Korean companies—NCSoft, Nexon, Netmarble, and Krafton—are said to be actively pitching their ideas for future *StarCraft*-branded games.

It's believed that some of these companies have already traveled to Blizzard’s headquarters in Irvine, California, to present their proposals. Each studio has a different vision for how to expand the beloved sci-fi universe:

• NCSoft, known for its work on the *Lineage* and *Guild Wars* franchises, is reportedly pitching a *StarCraft*-themed RPG—possibly an MMORPG.
• Nexon, the developer behind *The First Descendant*, is proposing what it describes as a “unique” interpretation of the *StarCraft* IP.
• Netmarble, which has developed titles like *Solo Leveling: Arise* and *Game of Thrones: Kingsroad*, is aiming to create a mobile-focused *StarCraft* experience.
• Krafton, best known for *PUBG* and its ambitious project inZOI (a spiritual successor to The Sims), is pushing for a *StarCraft* title built around its own development strengths.

While nothing is finalized, this news comes at a time when Blizzard appears to be seriously considering new directions for the *StarCraft* brand. Fans have been waiting for years since the release of *StarCraft II: Wings of Liberty* in 2010, and any sign of life from the franchise is met with excitement—even if past attempts haven’t always panned out.

In fact, according to Bloomberg reporter Jason Schreier during an interview on IGN’s Podcast Unlocked, Blizzard is currently working on yet another attempt at a *StarCraft* shooter. This latest effort is being led by Dan Hay, former executive producer on the *Far Cry* series, who joined Blizzard back in 2022. The information was shared as part of Schreier’s research for his book *Play Nice: The Rise, Fall, and Future of Blizzard Entertainment.*

When asked whether the project might actually see release, Schreier joked, “If it’s not canceled! This is Blizzard after all. Their history with StarCraft shooters is not good.” He confirmed that, as of the time of writing, the game was still in development—and emphasized that *StarCraft* is far from dead at Blizzard.

This wouldn’t be the first or even second time Blizzard tried to branch the franchise into the shooter genre. *StarCraft Ghost*, a tactical-action console title centered around the Dominion’s elite Ghost operatives, was announced in 2002 but ultimately canceled in 2006 following multiple delays. Then there was *Project Ares*, a Battlefield-style shooter set in the *StarCraft* universe, which was scrapped in 2019 to refocus resources on *Diablo IV* and *Overwatch 2*.

More recently, in November 2024, Blizzard was seen hiring for an “upcoming open-world shooter game,” with many industry insiders suspecting it could be the latest iteration of the long-rumored *StarCraft* FPS.

All of this suggests that Blizzard may finally be gearing up to give *StarCraft* the expanded presence it deserves across modern gaming platforms. The franchise has already seen renewed attention through recent initiatives such as the release of *StarCraft: Remastered* and *StarCraft II: Campaign Collection* on Xbox Game Pass, along with an upcoming crossover event in *Hearthstone*.

For now, fans can only wait and watch closely as more details emerge about what could be a significant revival of one of the most iconic sci-fi universes in video game history.
