Devs Hope Remaster Introduces Series to New Generation

The long-awaited Suikoden 1 & 2 HD Remaster is poised to rekindle the flame of this cherished JRPG series. In a heartfelt interview with Famitsu, Director Tatsuya Ogushi and Lead Planner Takahiro Sakiyama expressed their aspirations for the remaster to not only introduce the iconic Suikoden series to a new generation of gamers but also to reignite the passion of its dedicated fanbase.

Ogushi, with a profound connection to the series, paid tribute to the late Yoshitaka Murayama, the creator of Suikoden. "I'm sure Murayama would have wanted to be involved as well," Ogushi shared. "When I told him I was going to participate in the remake of the illustrations, he was very envious." This personal touch underscores the team's commitment to honoring the series' legacy.

Sakiyama, who directed Suikoden V, is eager to bring the series back into the spotlight. "I really wanted to bring 'Genso Suikoden' back to the world, and now I can finally deliver it," he stated. "I hope that the IP 'Genso Suikoden' will continue to expand from here into the future." Their enthusiasm is palpable, reflecting a deep desire to see the series flourish once more.

Suikoden 1 & 2 HD Remaster Overview

The Suikoden 1 & 2 HD Remaster draws its foundation from the Japan-exclusive Genso Suikoden 1 & 2 collection released for the PlayStation Portable in 2006. This collection, which enhanced the original games, was a treat that only Japanese players enjoyed. Now, Konami is bringing this collection to modern platforms with significant updates and improvements.

Visually, the remaster promises to revitalize the games with enhanced background illustrations boasting rich HD textures. This will make the worlds of Suikoden feel more immersive and detailed, from the grand castles of Gregminster to the battle-scarred landscapes of Suikoden 2. The pixel art of the original sprites is being refined while preserving the essence of the original design.

In addition to graphical enhancements, the remaster includes a Gallery featuring the game's music and cutscenes, and an event viewer that lets players relive memorable moments. These features are accessible from the title selection screen, adding layers of engagement for both new and returning players.

Addressing issues from the PSP collection, the HD remaster restores Suikoden 2’s infamous Luca Blight cutscene, which was previously shortened due to its intensity. Furthermore, to align with current standards, certain character dialogues have been adjusted. For instance, Richmond, the private investigator from Suikoden 2, no longer smokes, reflecting Japan's recent smoking bans.
