Take-Two 'Reasonably Confident' Amid Tariff Changes
In recent discussions about the impact of U.S. tariffs on the gaming industry, from hardware to software, opinions vary on the potential effects on consumers and businesses. However, Take-Two Interactive's CEO, Strauss Zelnick, displayed a calm demeanor during today's Q&A session with investors, indicating that he is not overly concerned about the potential for tariffs to affect his company's operations.
When queried about the implications of potential console price increases, such as those recently seen with the Xbox Series and anticipated for the PlayStation 5, Zelnick emphasized that Take-Two's financial projections for the next ten months remain robust. He acknowledged the unpredictability of tariff policies but expressed confidence that the company's guidance would not be significantly impacted unless there were drastic changes in the tariff landscape.
"Our guide is for the next ten months, essentially, that's the part of the fiscal year that hasn't elapsed yet, and it's very difficult to predict where tariffs will land, given how things have bumped around so far. We feel reasonably confident that our guide wouldn't be meaningfully affected, unless tariffs ran off in a very different direction than we currently expect. In any case, there's already a very substantial install base for all of our target platforms except Nintendo Switch 2, which is pre-launch. So we have, I think, enough insight that we wouldn't be affected by any changes."
Zelnick's confidence stems from the fact that most of Take-Two's upcoming releases will target platforms with existing large user bases. The potential for a few consumers to delay or forgo purchasing new consoles like the Xbox Series, PS5, or the upcoming Nintendo Switch 2 is unlikely to significantly impact the company's performance. Additionally, a substantial portion of Take-Two's revenue is derived from digital sales within ongoing titles such as GTA V, Red Dead Redemption 2, and their mobile offerings, which are not subject to tariffs.
Despite this confidence, Zelnick acknowledges the fluid nature of the tariff situation, mirroring sentiments from industry analysts who have repeatedly emphasized the unpredictability of tariffs over the past few months. Even Zelnick leaves room for potential shifts in policy.
In a conversation prior to the investor call, Zelnick shared insights on Take-Two's quarterly performance and discussed the development timeline for GTA 6, including its recent delay to next year. Additionally, he expressed optimism about the upcoming Nintendo Switch 2, further elaborating on these points during the Q&A session.
