The acclaimed Dungeons & Dragons show, Critical Role, is gearing up to unveil its first major video game, with CEO Travis Willingham teasing that an announcement could come "any day." This exciting news was shared during an interview with Business Insider, where details about the game's title and its integration into the Critical Role universe remain under wraps. However, Willingham assured fans that the development team is diligently working on the project.

Describing the upcoming video game, Willingham highlighted its interactive nature, stating, "They'll actually be getting their hand on the stick and controlling the outcome of the story, changing what might be possible from not just some of their favorite characters, but new offerings in the world of Exandria." This suggests that players will have a significant role in shaping the narrative within the rich tapestry of the Critical Role universe.

Travis Willingham, an actor and one of the stars of Critical Role, co-founded the company with fellow voice actors including Liam O'Brien, Marisha Ray, Sam Riegel, Ashley Johnson, Laura Bailey, Matthew Mercer, and others. Since its launch, Critical Role has expanded into a vast universe of content, including the popular Amazon Prime Video series, Critical Role: The Legend of Vox Machina.

While the video game will be a standalone project, it's not expected to directly tie into existing Critical Role narratives. In a December 2024 interview with Rolling Stone, Willingham mentioned that the team was in "active pursuit" of creating this video game spinoff, indicating they were nearing the end of a multi-year development process. Whether the game will follow one of Critical Role's campaigns or introduce an original story within Exandria remains to be seen.

The team had anticipated making an announcement by the end of 2024 or early 2025. Now, as we progress into the year, the announcement seems imminent. Willingham reflected on their approach to game development, telling Rolling Stone, "Those collaborations we’ve had with various partners have been little toe dips in the pool just to see how it feels... There’s a lot of upheaval in the interactive space right now. And we’ve seen studios sort of bear and weather those strains. It’s trying to become smarter about it and find out how we might fit into that larger ecosystem."

As of now, no release date for the Critical Role video game has been announced. In the meantime, fans can look forward to the first details on The Legend of Vox Machina Season 4.
