Sonic Galactic: A Sonic Mania-Inspired Fan Game

Sonic Galactic, a fan-made title from Starteam, evokes the spirit of Sonic Mania, captivating players with its pixel art and classic Sonic gameplay. This homage to the beloved 2017 title taps into the enduring energy of the Sonic fan community, constantly producing sequels and reinterpretations of the franchise's iconic titles.

The absence of an official Sonic Mania sequel, due to Sonic Team's shift away from pixel art and the developers' pursuit of new projects, left a void. While Sonic Superstars offered a 3D-enhanced successor, many fans remain attached to the timeless appeal of Mania's pixel art style. Sonic Galactic aims to fill this niche, joining other fan-made titles like Sonic and the Fallen Star in embracing this classic aesthetic.

Developed over four years and initially showcased at the 2020 Sonic Amateur Games Expo, Sonic Galactic imagines a 32-bit Sonic game for 5th-generation consoles—a "what-if" scenario exploring a potential Sega Saturn release. It successfully blends authentic retro 2D platforming with a unique twist.

Gameplay and Characters:

The second demo, released in early 2025, lets players experience brand-new zones with the classic trio of Sonic, Tails, and Knuckles. Joining the team are two new playable characters: Fang the Sniper from Sonic Triple Trouble, seeking revenge against Dr. Eggman, and Tunnel the Mole, hailing from Illusion Island.

Each character boasts unique pathways within each zone, mirroring the style of Sonic Mania. The special stages, reminiscent of Mania's design, challenge players to collect rings within a 3D environment against the clock. A typical playthrough takes about an hour to complete Sonic's levels in the second demo, with other characters offering roughly one stage each, resulting in a total playtime of a couple of hours.
