The Witcher 4 is in production hell because of the Unreal Engine

Daniel Vávra, creator of the Kingdom Come trilogy and Warhorse Studios co-founder, has voiced strong criticism of Unreal Engine, claiming its limitations hinder the creation of complex, open worlds. He suggests this engine choice is a contributing factor to The Witcher 4’s reported development difficulties.

Vávra contends that while Unreal Engine excels in creating desert and rock-heavy environments, its historical struggles with rendering detailed vegetation, even with Nanite technology, make it unsuitable for expansive, richly detailed worlds. He cites conversations with a CD Projekt Red employee who reportedly described significant challenges adapting scenes that ran flawlessly on REDengine to Unreal Engine, resulting in substantial production delays.

Vávra points out that most open-world games utilize proprietary engines, questioning CD Projekt Red's decision to switch from their established REDengine. While acknowledging Unreal Engine's visual capabilities, he highlights its demanding system requirements, potentially excluding a large segment of players who lack high-end PCs.

Despite the release of the original Kingdom Come: Deliverance several years ago, interest in its medieval Bohemian setting remains strong. The highly anticipated sequel, launching February 4th, promises to continue Indřich's story with enhanced visuals, refined combat, and a historically-grounded narrative.

This post summarizes the latest details surrounding the upcoming release, including system requirements and estimated playtime. We will provide download instructions for Kingdom Come: Deliverance 2 upon its release, ensuring you're among the first to experience its medieval atmosphere.
