Avowed's Success Spurs Talk of Expansions and Sequels

Following the successful launch of Avowed, Obsidian and Microsoft are reportedly pleased with sales figures. This positive reception has fueled speculation about potential future projects within the Avowed universe. In a recent Bloomberg interview (February 22, 2025), Avowed Game Director Carrie Patel hinted at the possibility of expansions or a sequel.

While no official plans have been announced, Patel expressed strong interest in continuing the Avowed story and leveraging the established world and team expertise. She stated, "Now that we’ve built this wonderful world, and also built this team strength and muscle memory around the content and gameplay in this world, I’d love to see us do more with it."

Navigating the Challenges of Avowed's Development

Patel also shared insights into the complex development journey of Avowed. The project, initiated in 2018 amidst Obsidian's sale considerations, faced numerous hurdles. The acquisition by Microsoft in 2020 brought changes, including the removal of features like multiplayer and a significant game overhaul in early 2021 with a leadership change.

Managing a team of over 80 developers presented unique challenges. Patel highlighted the iterative nature of game development, stating, "There’s this interesting thing I’ve seen on every project I’ve worked on or seen during my time at the studio — things are messy, messy, messy, then they start coming together." The final product reflects a refined focus on the Pillars of Eternity lore and a shift from an open world to open zones.

Pillars of Eternity Tactics on the Horizon?

The resurgence of the Pillars of Eternity franchise with Avowed has sparked interest in a new project: Pillars of Eternity Tactics. In a February 23, 2025 Twitch livestream, Pillars of Eternity Director Josh Sawyer confirmed internal enthusiasm for a tactics game within the franchise. However, he acknowledged the need to determine the project's scope, including team size, visual fidelity, and overall scale. Sawyer also reiterated his ambition to develop Pillars of Eternity 3, envisioning a budget comparable to Baldur’s Gate 3.
