Balatro Rejects Microtransactions, Ads: Dev's Stance

Oct 01,25(8 months ago)

The creator of Balatro explained his viral poker game intentionally avoids microtransactions and ads because seeing such monetization in other games makes him "want to put my computer in the dishwasher and set it to pots and pans."

"The real reason Balatro doesn't have microtransactions/season passes/ads/multiple DLCs isn't just ethics - it's because encountering those elements in other games makes me physically react," developer Localthunk wrote on Bluesky.

"I understand why developers implement these systems, but you're sabotaging the user experience when players' first impressions include invasive elements that aren't core gameplay."

When questioned if his comments specifically targeted Marvel Snap, Localthunk clarified: "This wasn't directed at them, though I'm not excusing their approach. There's a 95% chance a free-to-play game's main menu will have more complicated UI than its actual gameplay interface."

The microtransaction debate continues to rage across gaming communities, with increasing scrutiny over potentially exploitative monetization practices. Governments worldwide have taken action - Norway's consumer council condemned loot boxes as predatory, while Belgium and Netherlands implemented outright bans. U.S. senators have even proposed legislation against aggressive in-app purchases following FTC investigations.

The discussion reignited last week when Activision faced criticism for inserting ads into Call of Duty: Black Ops 6 and Warzone's loadout screens. The company later removed them, calling the implementation an accidental "feature test."

This controversy follows Localthunk's recent public stance against AI-generated art after a subreddit moderator falsely claimed neither the developer nor publisher Playstack opposed AI art. The Balatro creator issued a firm statement: "Playstack and I explicitly reject AI 'art.' I never incorporated it in my game and believe it harms real artists. That moderator no longer represents our team and has been removed."

Balatro has taken the gaming world by storm with its innovative blend of card-building and unconventional poker mechanics, earning a 9/10 in IGN's review. Our assessment praised it as "an endlessly satisfying roguelike that could easily consume entire weekends with its brilliant gameplay systems."
