Set to a unique rendition of The Cranberries' "Dreams," the trailer showcased PlayStation's iconic games, including Ghost of Tsushima, God of War, and Helldivers 2. Each game featured a thematic caption—for instance, "It's about fantasy" for Final Fantasy VII and "It's about fear" for Resident Evil. However, Bloodborne's closing appearance and its caption ignited fervent speculation.

Despite the lack of concrete information before or after the trailer's release, fans continue to speculate about a Bloodborne 2 or a 60fps remaster with enhanced visuals. This isn't the first time such rumors have surfaced. On August 17th, a PlayStation Italia Instagram post featuring iconic Bloodborne locations fueled similar speculation.

While Bloodborne's placement at the trailer's end might simply acknowledge its notoriously challenging gameplay, requiring player persistence, it could also hint at future updates.

PS5 Update: Customizable UI

Sony released a PS5 update to commemorate its 30th anniversary, including a limited-time PS1 boot-up sequence and customizable themes inspired by past consoles. Themes spanning PS1 to PS4 allow users to revisit the nostalgia of past PlayStation experiences.

This update lets PS5 users personalize their home screen's design and sound effects based on older consoles. After installing the update, navigate to PS5 Settings, select "PlayStation 30th Anniversary," then "Appearance and Sound" to customize your home screen.

Fans welcomed this surprise update, particularly the return of the PS4 UI. However, the update's limited-time nature has disappointed many, with some even expressing a willingness to pay for its permanence. Others speculate that this could be Sony testing UI customization options for future PS5 updates.

Sony's Handheld Console in Development

Speculation extends beyond the PS5 update. On December 2nd, 2024, Digital Foundry on YouTube corroborated Bloomberg's report of Sony developing a handheld console for PS5 games. Bloomberg's November 25th article stated that Sony aims to enter the portable gaming market, currently dominated by Nintendo Switch.

Digital Foundry's John Linneman stated that they had heard about the handheld months earlier from multiple sources. The panel discussed that both Microsoft and Sony entering the portable gaming market is a logical step, given the prevalence of mobile gaming. Their handhelds could complement mobile devices.

While Microsoft has openly expressed interest in a handheld device, Sony remains tight-lipped. Despite Digital Foundry's confirmation, the release of both Sony's and Microsoft's handhelds may be years away, as they need to develop affordable yet graphically advanced devices to compete with Nintendo. Meanwhile, Nintendo's president, Shuntaro Furukawa, announced on Twitter (X) in May 2024 that more information on the Nintendo Switch's successor will be revealed within the fiscal year.
