Hunt the Yotei Six with Unmatched Freedom

In an April 24 interview with Famitsu, Sucker Punch developers revealed insights into Ghost of Yotei, the standalone sequel to the acclaimed PlayStation exclusive Ghost of Tsushima. The game introduces deeper gameplay mechanics and a richer narrative.

Creative Director Jason Cornell highlighted that the game offers the studio’s most expansive maps and greatest player freedom yet. He noted, “Players can independently track down the Yotei Six and pursue their quest for vengeance, without being guided by a linear path.”

Recently, Sucker Punch announced the game’s PlayStation 5 release date and debuted a trailer, “The Onryō’s List,” showcasing story elements and gameplay. The trailer introduced protagonist Atsu and her mission to avenge her family against the Yotei Six.

Expanded Weapon Choices

Beyond open-world exploration, players will enjoy greater freedom in weapon selection. The latest trailer sparked fan speculation about new weapons, which Creative Director Nate Fox confirmed in the interview. In addition to the samurai sword, players can wield an odachi, chain sickle, double sword, and spear.

Fox emphasized the sword’s centrality but noted that other weapons can be mastered through encounters with teachers and masters in the story and open world.

Unlike its predecessor, where samurai honor shaped the narrative, Atsu faces no such constraints, as she is not bound by samurai traditions. Her versatile combat style allows her to pick up and use dropped enemy weapons, such as throwing them at foes. Fox clarified, “This is limited to certain weapons, but if you can wield it, you can use it effectively.”

Ezo: A Stunning and Dangerous Setting

Set in 1603 around Mt. Yotei in Ezo (modern-day Hokkaido), Ghost of Yotei offers a striking backdrop that Cornell described as “a lawless yet breathtaking landscape where danger and natural beauty coexist.”

The game incorporates elements of Ainu culture, indigenous to Japan’s northern regions. The developers conducted extensive research in Hokkaido, visiting museums and consulting Ainu culture experts. Cornell noted that Hokkaido’s stunning, nature-filled scenery inspired them to recreate its essence for a global audience.

Ghost of Tsushima earned praise from Japanese critics for its authentic portrayal of Japanese culture and history. Sucker Punch aims to maintain this standard in Ghost of Yotei, capturing the “perilous beauty of Ezo’s wilderness.”
