Irrational Games Shock: Bioshock Creator Stunned
Irrational Games' Closure: A Retrospective by Ken Levine
Ken Levine, the creative mind behind BioShock Infinite, recently reflected on the unexpected closure of Irrational Games following the game's success. He described the decision by Take-Two Interactive as "complicated," revealing that the studio's shuttering came as a surprise to most, including himself. Despite his own desire to leave Irrational, Levine expected the studio to continue operating. "I thought they were going to continue. But it wasn’t my company," he stated in a recent interview with Edge Magazine.
Levine, alongside Jonathan Chey and Robert Fermier, founded Irrational Games, creating the acclaimed BioShock franchise. The studio's closure in 2014, after the release of BioShock Infinite, led to its rebranding as Ghost Story Games in 2017 under Take-Two. This event occurred amidst a period of significant industry upheaval marked by widespread layoffs.
Levine acknowledged personal challenges during BioShock Infinite's development, impacting his leadership. "I don’t think I was in any state to be a good leader," he explained. Despite this, he strived to make the layoffs as smooth as possible, ensuring transition packages and ongoing support for the Irrational team. He even suggested that a BioShock remake would have been a suitable project for the studio to undertake.
Looking ahead, the anticipated BioShock 4 fuels speculation, particularly concerning lessons learned from BioShock Infinite's launch. While announced five years ago, a release date remains unconfirmed. Fans eagerly await the new installment, with many anticipating an open-world setting, retaining the series' signature first-person perspective. BioShock Infinite's legacy, despite its melancholic tone, continues to resonate, shaping expectations for the future of the franchise.
