Monster Hunter Wilds Developers Weigh In on a Potential 15th Weapon Type

A New Weapon Remains a Possibility

After over a decade with the same weapon roster, the Monster Hunter series might finally see a new addition. In a February 16, 2025 interview with PCGamesN, Monster Hunter Wilds Director Yuya Tokuda discussed the possibility of introducing a fifteenth weapon type.

Monster Hunter Wilds offers players 14 weapon choices, a selection unchanged since Monster Hunter 4 and the introduction of the Insect Glaive over ten years ago. While Tokuda expressed the team's interest in creating a new weapon, he clarified that the decision to not include one in recent titles wasn't due to any specific obstacle. The difficulty lies in designing a weapon that doesn't significantly overlap with existing options.

Tokuda emphasized the extensive effort required to refine existing weapons. He explained that, rather than adding a new weapon, resources are better allocated to enhancing existing ones with new combos, moves, and mechanics to maintain a fresh experience.

Capcom's Approach to Weapon Refinement in Monster Hunter Wilds

Capcom's dedication to innovation is evident in MH Wilds' additions like Focus Mode and Power Clash. While incorporating community feedback from the beta, Tokuda stressed the importance of preserving the core feel of each weapon.

Weapon balancing across titles is a key consideration. Tokuda described the process as establishing a conceptual feel for each weapon type, which is then tested and refined based on player feedback. He highlighted the challenges of balancing weapons in Wilds, particularly given the additions made in Iceborne, which raised the skill ceiling.

Despite this, MH Wilds represents a fresh start, with a complete overhaul of existing weapons to ensure they align with the game's overall design philosophy.

Monster Hunter Now x Monster Hunter Wilds Collaboration Event Phase 2

Celebrating the upcoming release of MH Wilds, Monster Hunter Now's collaboration event enters Phase 2 on February 28, 2025. This phase introduces the Chatacabra, twelve Hope weapons from MH Wilds, and two new layered armors (Hope armor style and a Seikret mount-themed armor).

Players can also earn vouchers for MH Wilds items (Mega Potion, Dust of Life, Energy Drink, Well-done Steak, and Dash Juice) through limited-time quests, redeemable on any platform.

Niantic's Senior Producer, Sakae Osumi, hinted at future collaborations in a February 18, 2025 press briefing for Season 5, expressing a desire to incorporate more monsters from Wilds.
