Neil Druckmann Explains Why Abby Didn't Bulk Up for The Last of Us Season 2

In adapting "The Last of Us Part 2" for HBO, the show's creators, Neil Druckmann and Craig Mazin, have decided to portray Abby, played by Kaitlyn Dever, differently from her video game counterpart. Druckmann explained to Entertainment Weekly that the necessity for Abby to be muscular, as seen in the game, is less crucial in the television format. He noted that Abby's role in the game required her to feel mechanically distinct from Ellie, making her more akin to Joel in terms of brute force. However, the show's focus shifts more towards drama than constant action, reducing the need for Abby to be as physically imposing.
"We would've struggled to find someone as good as Kaitlyn to play this role," Druckmann stated, emphasizing the importance of casting over physicality. He further explained that the game's design necessitated different play styles for Ellie and Abby, with Abby needing to feel larger and more powerful. In contrast, the series prioritizes storytelling and character development over the mechanics of gameplay.
Craig Mazin added that the adaptation offers an opportunity to explore Abby's character in a new light, focusing on her inner strength rather than physical prowess. He teased that this aspect of her character would be a significant part of both the current and future seasons, hinting at HBO's plans to expand "The Last of Us Part 2" beyond a single season. Unlike the first season, which covered the entire first game, Season 2 will end on a "natural breakpoint" after seven episodes, leaving room for further exploration in subsequent seasons.
The character of Abby has been at the center of controversy, with some fans expressing their discontent through harassment of Naughty Dog staff, including Druckmann and actress Laura Bailey, who voiced Abby in the game. This toxicity even led to HBO providing extra security for Kaitlyn Dever during filming. Isabel Merced, who plays Dina in Season 2, commented on the absurdity of the situation, reminding fans that Abby is a fictional character.
