Free-to-play 3v3 shooter Spectre Divide is shutting down six months after its September 2024 launch, just weeks after arriving on PS5 and Xbox Series X|S. Its developer, Mountaintop Studios, is also closing its doors.

Mountaintop CEO Nate Mitchell confirmed the news in a social media statement. He explained that the Season 1 launch didn't achieve the success needed to sustain the game and the studio. While the game initially attracted around 400,000 players in its first week, with a peak concurrent player count of approximately 10,000 across all platforms, sustained player numbers and revenue weren't enough to cover operational costs. Despite exploring options like finding a publisher, additional investment, or acquisition, Mountaintop ultimately ran out of funding. Mitchell acknowledged the current challenging climate within the gaming industry.

Spectre Divide Combat

Spectre Divide will be taken offline within 30 days. Players will receive refunds for any money spent since the Season 1 launch. This news contradicts October 2024 reports stating the game was secure and would continue receiving updates.

IGN's August 2024 preview praised Spectre Divide's tactical gameplay and unique Duality system, which allowed players to control two characters simultaneously. However, its swift closure follows other recent high-profile live-service game failures, including Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League and Concord.
