Ubisoft Montreal Unveils "Alterra," a Novel Voxel-Based Social Sim

Ubisoft Montreal, renowned for titles like Assassin's Creed Valhalla and Far Cry 6, is reportedly developing a new voxel game codenamed "Alterra," as revealed by Insider Gaming on November 26th. This project, drawing inspiration from both Minecraft and Animal Crossing, reportedly emerged from a previously cancelled four-year development.

The core gameplay loop, according to sources, mirrors the charm of Animal Crossing. Players interact with "Matterlings," unique creatures inhabiting a home island, engaging in activities reminiscent of the popular life-sim. Beyond the home island, exploration extends to diverse biomes, each offering distinct building materials and new Matterlings to encounter. However, this exploration isn't without peril, as players will face enemies along their journey. The game also incorporates Minecraft-style biome exploration and resource gathering, with biomes like forests providing materials for wooden structures.

Matterlings are described as resembling Funko Pop figures, with large heads and designs inspired by both fantastical creatures (like dragons) and familiar animals (cats, dogs). Variations within each species are determined by their attire.

The project, led by producer Fabien Lhéraud (a 24-year Ubisoft veteran) and creative director Patrick Redding (known for his work on Gotham Knights, Splinter Cell Blacklist, and Far Cry 2), has been in development for over 18 months, commencing in December 2020.

While the concept is exciting, it's crucial to remember that "Alterra" is still under development and subject to change.

Understanding Voxel Games

Voxel games utilize a unique rendering technique. Objects are constructed from tiny cubes or voxels, arranged and rendered in 3D, similar to digital LEGO bricks. While Minecraft often gets categorized as a voxel game due to its aesthetic, it technically utilizes traditional polygon models for its blocks. True voxel games, like the upcoming "Alterra," offer a distinct level of detail and interaction.

In contrast to polygon-based rendering (used in games like S.T.A.L.K.E.R. 2), voxel-based rendering provides a unique sense of volume and prevents the clipping issues often seen in polygon-based games. Ubisoft's foray into voxel technology with "Alterra" promises a visually distinct and engaging gaming experience.
