LocalThunk, a solo developer working under the pseudonym, achieved a remarkable feat in 2024 with their game, Balatro. This indie title defied all expectations, selling over 5 million copies and becoming a genuine industry phenomenon, even earning accolades at The Game Awards 2024. The success surprised everyone, including the creator himself.
Initially, LocalThunk anticipated modest reviews, perhaps a 6 or 7 out of 10, given the game's unconventional design. However, a stunning 91/100 score from PC Gamer, followed by similarly positive reviews elsewhere, propelled Balatro to a Metacritic and OpenCritic average of 90. This was a complete shock to the developer, who admitted they would have personally rated the game an 8 at most.
Playstack, the publisher, contributed significantly through proactive press engagement leading up to the release. But the real catalyst for Balatro's explosive sales was organic word-of-mouth marketing, exceeding initial projections by a factor of 10 to 20. The game's Steam launch saw 119,000 copies sold within the first 24 hours—a moment the developer described as utterly surreal.
