Civ VII: A New Era of Leadership
Civilization's leaders have been integral to the series' identity since its inception. Each leader embodies their civilization's essence, making them as crucial as the civilization itself. However, the portrayal of leaders has diversified across each iteration, refining the concept of leadership and its impact on gameplay.
This article examines Civilization's leader evolution, highlighting changes across different installments and how Civilization VII introduces a unique approach to leadership.
Early Civ: A Focus on Global Powerhouses
The original Civilization featured a relatively simple roster compared to later games. The selection primarily focused on prominent global powers and historical figures from the early 1990s and antiquity.
With limited scope and technical capabilities, the game included 15 civilizations, featuring leaders like Abraham Lincoln, Tokugawa Ieyasu, Mahatma Gandhi, and Julius Caesar. The selection prioritized well-known figures, with Elizabeth I as the sole female leader. This approach, while straightforward, reflects the context of the game's release.
This clear-cut selection process evolved with subsequent installments.
Civ II-V: Expanding the Definition of Leadership
Civilization II expanded the roster and included lesser-known powers. It also introduced a separate female leader roster, providing alternative choices for each civilization. The definition of "leader" broadened to include influential figures beyond heads of state, such as Sacagawea and Amaterasu.
Civ III integrated female leaders directly into the main roster, replacing some historically dominant male figures. Civ IV and V further expanded the roster and the definition of leadership, encompassing revolutionaries, generals, and reformers.
The focus shifted from solely powerful figures to a broader representation of humanity.
Civ VI: Enhanced Characterization and Diversity
Civilization VI significantly enhanced characterization and diversity, introducing stylized animated leaders. Leader Personas, alternative versions of the same leader with distinct playstyles, were also introduced. Lesser-known historical figures and heroes from less prominent civilizations were included, such as Lautaro and Bà Triệu.
The game also featured civilizations with multiple leader options, emphasizing different aspects of their rule and offering varied gameplay experiences.
Civ VII: A Bold Departure and Inclusive Roster
Civilization VII represents a significant evolution in leader selection. It features the most diverse roster yet, with unconventional leaders and multiple personas designed for distinct playstyles. The mix-and-match approach to civilizations and leaders allows for greater inclusion of lesser-known figures.
Harriet Tubman, the American abolitionist, is a notable example, filling the spymaster role. Niccolò Machiavelli, known for his political writings, also makes an appearance. José Rizal of the Philippines represents a significant addition, focusing on diplomacy and narrative events.
Over almost three decades, Civilization has evolved from a game focused on major world powers to a diverse and imaginative representation of humanity's history and leadership.
