Logitech's 'Forever Mouse' Subscription: A Flop as Expected

Logitech CEO Introduces 'Forever Mouse' That Might Require Subscription
Logitech's new CEO, Hanneke Faber, has introduced a groundbreaking concept known as the "forever mouse." This premium, luxury mouse is designed to last indefinitely, much like a Rolex watch, through regular software updates. In an interview with The Verge's Decoder podcast, Faber shared her vision for the forever mouse, emphasizing its potential to be a long-lasting, high-quality product that evolves with technology.
Logitech 'Forever Mouse' Part of Broader Subscription Trend, and Gamers Find It Ridiculous
Faber explained that the forever mouse is still in the conceptual stage but is not "super far away" from becoming a reality. The idea is to keep the mouse updated and functional indefinitely through software updates, reducing the need for frequent hardware replacements. However, the high cost of creating such a product might necessitate a subscription model to ensure profitability. This subscription would primarily cover software updates, similar to Logitech's current video conferencing services.
Faber also mentioned exploring other business models, such as a trade-in program similar to Apple's iPhone upgrade program, where customers could exchange their mouse for a newer version. "The forever mouse could be the mouse that you keep and we just send you software updates, but it could also be the mouse that you turn in at Best Buy and we get it back or Best Buy takes it back and refurbs and resells it," she explained.
Ongoing Subscription-Based Models Trend in Gaming
The forever mouse concept aligns with the growing trend of subscription-based models in the gaming industry. Faber highlighted the significant market opportunity in gaming, where high-quality, durable peripherals are essential. She noted that the gaming sector represents a "real growth opportunity" for Logitech.
Subscription models are increasingly popular across various industries, including gaming. For example, HP introduced a printing service that offers 20 pages per month for $6.99, while Xbox and Ubisoft have raised the prices of their subscription services, Xbox Game Pass and Ubisoft+, this year.
Fan Reactions
Screenshots taken via Twitter (X) and Ars Technica forums show a strong reaction from the gaming community. Many gamers expressed skepticism and humor about the idea of subscribing to a mouse. One user jokingly remarked, "I'm just surprised Ubisoft didn’t think of this first," reflecting the general sentiment that a subscription model for a basic hardware item like a mouse seems unnecessary and out of touch with consumer expectations.
