Games Workshop Author's NDA Sparks Cavill Warhammer 40k Rumors

Nov 11,25(6 months ago)

The narrative of Warhammer 40,000 is a slow-moving entity. The writers at Games Workshop often take years to advance the overarching plot. Consider the return of the beloved Primarch, Lion El'Jonson, announced in March 2023. Now, more than two years later, the character has yet to make a significant impact in the setting, and his eagerly awaited reunion with his brother, Roboute Guilliman, appears more distant than ever.

Tantalizing plot threads are left unresolved, sometimes for decades. Answers remain frustratingly elusive. Cliffhangers seem destined to linger in a perpetual state of suspense, never reaching a conclusion. Such is the nature of Games Workshop's grimdark 41st millennium, which has surged in popularity over the last decade. Now, any news regarding the story's progression is scrutinized intensely, as if under investigation by the Inquisition itself.

This brings us to the latest Facebook post by celebrated Black Library author Dan Abnett. Abnett, arguably the most prominent Warhammer 40,000 writer today, is central to the setting's development. His extensive list of Warhammer 40,000 books has established much of the lore fans know and love, including the acclaimed Gaunt's Ghosts and Eisenhorn series, as well as key installments in the sprawling Horus Heresy saga.

Let's focus on Eisenhorn, as it's the subject of the latest speculation. Eisenhorn is a trilogy of sci-fi crime novels centered on Inquisitors Gregor Eisenhorn and Gideon Ravenor, the latter of whom received his own spin-off series. The core premise involves hunting heretics and daemons while resisting the mind-shattering powers of Chaos. While set within the Warhammer 40,000 universe, the story is more focused and intimate in scope compared to other galaxy-spanning tales that feature protracted space battles and legions of Space Marines fighting alien horrors and even each other.

The Eisenhorn saga includes a spin-off series following an Inquisitorial agent named Alizebeth Bequin. The first Bequin novel, Pariah, was released in 2012. Its sequel, the lore-rich Penitent, followed nearly a decade later in March 2021. The highly anticipated third book in the series, Pandaemonium, has no release date, and the wait for an announcement is becoming Warhammer 40,000's equivalent of George R.R. Martin's long-delayed Game of Thrones novel, The Winds of Winter.

Why do so many Warhammer 40,000 lore enthusiasts care deeply about Pandaemonium? Because it promises to advance the overarching narrative. Penitent concluded with a major lore revelation (concerning the identity of the mysterious King in Yellow, which we won't spoil here), meaning the repercussions of Pandaemonium could be immense. Everyone is eager to know what happens next and is urging Abnett to finish the book.

This leads us to a seemingly innocuous Facebook post by Abnett himself, promoting his appearance at this weekend's Broadside Games Show in Gillingham, Kent, England. It includes a cautionary note:

By the way… my previous posts about this event (and, actually, pretty much anything I post) have resulted in many comments asking for Pandaemonium (Bequin book 3). Positively demanding it. And I’m delighted you’re keen, because so am I. But for those who don’t know, it is not MY decision when Pandaemonium gets finished and published. For reasons an NDA prevents me from discussing, Bequin 3 — and some other things — are held up for a while. It’s coming — and I’ll be delighted to bring it to you — but in the meantime, try to be patient… and maybe try to enjoy the things that I AM writing.
This message was brought to you by peace, love, and shooty-death-kill-in-space. See you Saturday.

So, Abnett is bound by a non-disclosure agreement that prohibits him from explaining why Pandaemonium and "some other things" are delayed. This alone might not warrant much attention, but combined with a Reddit post from March, it certainly stirs speculation.

Three months ago, Redditor Zigoia recounted a meeting with Abnett at a book signing in a Warhammer store in Maidstone, Kent. Zigoia reported that Abnett told him the delay for Pandaemonium "is because of the potential lore impact it’s going to have on the setting — and is due to GW wanting to get the lore in the TV show totally settled first. They apparently don’t want to end up having some of the potentially galaxy-shaking events of Pandaemonium contradict what they lay out in the show."

The TV show! This refers to Henry Cavill's Warhammer 40,000 Cinematic Universe, resulting from a deal between Games Workshop and Amazon for movies and TV shows based on the tabletop game. It's an incredibly exciting development, especially given Cavill's well-documented passion for Warhammer 40,000. Not only is he set to star in the project, but he is also listed as an executive producer. Cavill is helping to guide this endeavor, much like the Emperor steering humanity through the Warp.

We know very little about Cavill's Warhammer 40,000 adaptation. We don't know which characters it will feature, where in the setting it will take place, or even when in the timeline it will be set. Who will Cavill play? It's unknown. But one character frequently suggested by fans as a perfect fit is Eisenhorn, from Abnett's series of the same name.

Considering this, it's understandable why Abnett would be constrained by NDAs regarding his saga's future. If the delay to Pandaemonium is because Games Workshop wants to align its Amazon projects seamlessly with Warhammer 40,000 canon, ensuring veteran fans and newcomers aren't faced with contradictory lore, it makes sense that the revelations in Pandaemonium might need to wait.

Unfortunately for Warhammer 40,000 lore fans, this likely means an even longer wait for Pandaemonium than anticipated. When Games Workshop confirmed the deal in December 2024, it stated that a synopsis and storyline order for Amazon's Warhammer 40,000 films and series were in place. However, Games Workshop cautioned that "it’ll be some years" before the first project is released. This might explain why the Warhammer 40,000 narrative feels stalled, with isolated developments offering little new information to hardcore fans until Pandaemonium potentially rewrites the rules.

To bridge the gap, let's indulge in some speculative fun. Does Abnett's NDA hint that Amazon and Cavill are adapting his Eisenhorn series? Remember, I mentioned it has a tighter scope than some grander Warhammer 40,000 stories. This could make it a more feasible adaptation for Amazon to fund compared to something requiring a budget on the scale of The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power, like the massive Horus Heresy.

If Amazon and Cavill have chosen Eisenhorn, perhaps Abnett is involved in the project, leading Games Workshop to impose strict confidentiality. Maybe Cavill is set to play Eisenhorn, as many fans hope. Just this week, Cavill mentioned he was enjoying the challenge of adapting what he called the "tricky" and "very complex" Warhammer 40,000 tabletop game. Bringing Eisenhorn to life in live-action could be a key part of that challenge.
