"Resident Evil 2 and 4 Remakes: A Daunting Development Journey"

Yasuhiro Anpo, the director behind the acclaimed remakes of Resident Evil 2 and Resident Evil 4, shared insights into the decision-making process that led to the revival of these classic titles. Anpo disclosed that the journey began with the recognition of fervent fan interest in bringing back the glory of the 1998 cult classic, Resident Evil 2. He stated, "We realized: people really want this to happen." This realization prompted producer Hirabayashi to decisively say, "Alright, we'll do it."
Initially, the team contemplated starting with Resident Evil 4. However, after thorough discussions, they concluded that RE4 was already highly praised and nearly perfect in its original form. Making changes to such a revered game posed significant risks. Consequently, the focus shifted to the earlier game in the series, which was in dire need of modernization. The developers also delved into fan projects to gain a deeper understanding of what the community desired from the remakes.
Despite Capcom's internal deliberations, doubts persisted even among fans. Following the release of the Resident Evil 2 and Resident Evil 3 remakes, and the subsequent announcement of the Resident Evil 4 remake, some fans voiced concerns. They argued that unlike its predecessors, Resident Evil 4, released in 2005, did not require as significant an update. This was largely due to RE4's revolutionary impact on the survival horror genre, featuring dynamic camera angles and smoother controls that set it apart from the fixed camera and clunky mechanics of the earlier games.
Despite these initial reservations, the Resident Evil 4 remake successfully preserved the essence of the original while enhancing both gameplay and narrative elements. The commercial success and overwhelmingly positive critical reception underscored that Capcom had indeed chosen the right path. It demonstrated that even a game considered nearly untouchable could be reimagined with reverence for its original form and a fresh, creative approach.
