"Wheel of Time RPG Confirmed: No Release Date Yet, May Launch on PS6 and Next Xbox"
The recent announcement of a The Wheel of Time video game in development has taken fans by surprise and ignited a wave of skepticism across online platforms. As reported by Variety, a leading Hollywood trade publication, the game is described as a "AAA open-world role-playing game" set to be released on PC and consoles, drawing from Robert Jordan’s beloved 14-book series. The project is slated for a three-year development timeline.
The game is being crafted at iwot Studios' newly established game development studio in Montreal, under the leadership of Craig Alexander, a former Warner Bros. Games executive. Alexander's notable past work includes overseeing development for Turbine (now WB Games Boston) franchises such as The Lord of the Rings Online, Dungeons & Dragons Online, and Asheron's Call. Despite Alexander’s impressive credentials, the involvement of iwot Studios, which originally acquired the rights to The Wheel of Time as Red Eagle Entertainment in 2004, and the ambitious three-year development timeline have raised eyebrows among fans.
A quick search online shows that iwot Studios has a strained relationship with the dedicated The Wheel of Time fanbase. Numerous fan posts express skepticism about the studio, with some labeling it as an "IP camper" and others accusing it of mismanaging the The Wheel of Time IP. References to a decade-old Reddit post further highlight these grievances, pointing to multiple failed projects over the years. Additionally, the idea that a newly formed studio could rapidly produce a triple-A RPG that meets the high expectations of The Wheel of Time enthusiasts has led to a widespread "we'll believe it when we see it" sentiment online.
Despite these concerns, The Wheel of Time has recently enjoyed a surge in popularity thanks to its Amazon Prime Video series, which concluded its third season. While the first two seasons made significant changes to the original story, causing some upset among core fans, Season 3 managed to turn things around with improved storytelling. This success has introduced the series to a broader audience, setting the stage for renewed interest in the franchise.
To delve deeper into the project and address the online criticism, I reached out to iwot Studios. In a video call with Rick Selvage, the head of iwot Studios, and Craig Alexander, the studio head for their gaming division, I sought to gain insights into the project's current status, its scope, what fans can anticipate, and how they plan to respond to the skepticism expressed by the fan community.
