Gundam Breaker 4: Multi-Platform Mastery
Gundam Breaker 4: A Deep Dive Review Across Platforms, Including Steam Deck Performance
Back in 2016, the Gundam Breaker series was a niche find for PS Vita owners seeking import-friendly titles. Fast forward to 2024, and Gundam Breaker 4's global, multi-platform launch is a significant milestone for Western fans. This extended review covers my 60+ hours across various platforms, highlighting its strengths and addressing some current shortcomings.

The significance of Gundam Breaker 4 extends beyond the game itself. No more importing Asia English releases! Unlike the PlayStation-exclusive Gundam Breaker 3, this iteration boasts dual audio (English and Japanese) and extensive subtitle support (EFIGS and more).
The narrative offers a blend of highs and lows. While some pre-mission dialogue feels protracted, the latter half delivers compelling character reveals and more engaging conversations. Newcomers will find the story accessible, although the impact of certain character appearances may be lessened without prior series experience. (Embargo restrictions limit my discussion to the first two chapters, which feel rather straightforward.) I grew fond of the main cast, though my personal favorites appear later.

However, the true appeal lies in Gunpla creation. The customization depth is astonishing. Beyond individual part adjustments (arms, ranged/melee weapons), you can fine-tune part size and scale, even incorporating SD (super deformed) parts for unique Frankenstein-esque creations.
Builder parts further expand customization, adding functionalities and skills. EX and OP skills, dependent on parts and weapons, enhance combat. Ability cartridges, unlocked later, provide additional stat buffs and debuffs.

Missions reward parts and materials for upgrades and rarity increases, unlocking more skills. The game's difficulty is well-balanced; grinding isn't strictly necessary on normal difficulty. Three higher difficulties unlock later, significantly increasing the challenge. Optional quests, including a fun survival mode, provide extra rewards and variety.

Extensive paint, decal, and weathering options cater to Gunpla enthusiasts. The sheer depth of customization is impressive.
The gameplay itself is consistently engaging, even on easier difficulties. Weapon variety and skill customization maintain freshness. Boss fights, featuring Gunpla emerging from boxes, are consistently thrilling, often involving weak point targeting and multi-stage health bars. One specific boss fight proved challenging due to weapon limitations, easily resolved by switching to a whip. A dual boss encounter presented the most significant difficulty, primarily due to AI behavior.

Visually, the game is a mixed bag. Early environments feel somewhat lacking, but overall variety is good. Gunpla models and animations are exceptionally well-rendered. The art style, deliberately non-realistic, works well and scales effectively on lower-end hardware. Effects are impressive, and boss fight scale is spectacular.
The soundtrack is uneven, with forgettable tracks alongside some stand-out pieces. The absence of licensed anime music, a common feature in past Gundam games, is disappointing. Custom music loading, present in other titles, is also missing.

Voice acting is surprisingly good in both English and Japanese. I preferred the English dub for action sequences, finding subtitles distracting during combat.
Minor issues include a repetitive mission type and a few bugs. One bug prevented name saving; others appeared Steam Deck-specific (extended loading times returning to the title screen and a mission crash on my monitor, resolved when playing directly on the Deck).

Online multiplayer functionality remains untested on PC pre-launch. I'll update this review once server testing is complete.
My concurrent Master Grade Gunpla build (RG 78-2 MG 3.0) provided a unique perspective, highlighting the intricate design process. (I'll complete this build post-embargo.)

Platform Differences:
- PC: Supports >60fps, mouse/keyboard, and controller (with multiple prompt options). Runs flawlessly on Steam Deck (likely Steam Deck Verified). Minor text size issues on Deck.
- PS5: 60fps cap, excellent visuals, good rumble and Activity Card support.
- Switch: Lower resolution, detail, and reflections compared to PS5. Assembly and diorama modes feel sluggish. Portability is its main advantage.

DLC: Early DLC access revealed non-game-changing unlocks. Diorama content appears promising.

Overall: Gundam Breaker 4 is a spectacular entry, excelling in customization and gameplay. While the story is enjoyable, the core focus is on Gunpla building and combat. Platform choice depends on priorities (performance vs. portability). My Steam Deck experience was exceptional.
