Phil Spencer Reflects on Xbox's Past Mistakes and Future Plans

Xbox CEO Phil Spencer recently opened up about some of the "worst decisions" made by Xbox throughout its history, highlighting missed opportunities with major franchises like Destiny and Guitar Hero. During a PAX West 2024 interview, Spencer shared his regret at not fully embracing these titles earlier, despite his close proximity to their development. While initially hesitant about Destiny's potential, he acknowledges its eventual success and the valuable lessons learned from Bungie's expertise. Similarly, his initial skepticism towards Guitar Hero proved to be a costly oversight.

Despite these past setbacks, Spencer maintains a forward-looking perspective, emphasizing the company's focus on future projects. However, Funcom's chief product officer, Scott Junior, has acknowledged challenges in optimizing the game for the Xbox Series S, necessitating a PC-first launch strategy. Junior assures fans that the game will ultimately perform well even on older hardware.

Meanwhile, the indie title Entoria: The Last Song has experienced significant delays on Xbox due to a lack of communication from Microsoft. Jyamma Games, the developer, reports that their submission for the Xbox Series X/S versions remains unanswered, resulting in a postponed launch on the platform. The game will launch on PlayStation 5 and PC, leaving Xbox players awaiting further updates. The developer's frustration highlights the challenges faced by smaller studios navigating the complexities of Xbox's submission process. The situation underscores a contrast between Xbox's ambitious plans for major franchises and the hurdles faced by smaller independent developers seeking to bring their games to the platform.
