Doug Cockle Discusses Voicing Geralt for Netflix

When it comes to portrayals of Geralt of Rivia, Henry Cavill may be the most recognizable face on screen, but for many fans—especially within the gaming community—the definitive voice behind the Witcher is Doug Cockle. As the vocal talent behind CD Projekt Red’s acclaimed *The Witcher* RPG series, Cockle’s interpretation has long been regarded as the gold standard. Now, his iconic performance has crossed into Netflix’s *The Witcher* universe with the new animated film, *The Witcher: Sirens of the Deep*, where he lends his instantly recognizable voice to the character in a fresh narrative direction.

Though this version of Geralt differs from the one seen in the games and live-action adaptations, Cockle was not asked to mimic Henry Cavill or Liam Hemsworth, who will take over the role in the next season of the Netflix series. Instead, he was free to deliver the same deep, gravelly tone that fans have come to love across nearly two decades of video game performances. The result? A continuation of the character that feels authentic and familiar, yet adapted to an entirely new setting.

Cockle first developed Geralt’s distinctive voice back in 2005 while recording dialogue for the original *Witcher* game. At the time, he found himself pushing his vocal range to its limits. “I had to go very, very low,” he recalls. “It was something I had to force at first.” With sessions lasting up to nine hours a day, the physical toll was significant. However, over time, his voice adjusted—much like an athlete builds endurance through repetition—allowing him to maintain the character's unique tone without strain.

As development continued into *The Witcher 2*, Cockle received a new source of inspiration: the English translations of Andrzej Sapkowski’s original novels. Prior to that, his understanding of Geralt came solely from CD Projekt Red’s guidance. Once he read *The Last Wish*, however, everything clicked. The developers had always emphasized that Geralt was emotionally restrained, a concept Cockle initially struggled with as an actor eager to explore emotional depth. Reading the books clarified why that restraint was essential to the character’s identity.

Cockle quickly became a fan of Sapkowski’s writing, especially *Season of Storms*, a story he would love to see adapted into future *Witcher* projects. He describes the novel as both horrifying and thrilling, filled with intense action sequences that could translate well into animation or live-action episodes.

In *Sirens of the Deep*, based on the short story *A Little Sacrifice* from *Sword of Destiny*, Geralt finds himself caught between warring kingdoms after a mermaid and a human prince fall in love. While the plot leans into dark fantasy and political intrigue, Cockle highlights a lighter moment between Geralt and Jaskier around a campfire as one of his favorite scenes. These rare glimpses of humor reveal a softer side of Geralt—a dimension Cockle appreciates even if the Witcher isn’t particularly good at being funny.

Bringing New Life to a Familiar Voice

Though Cockle was comfortable slipping back into Geralt’s persona, *Sirens of the Deep* presented a new challenge: speaking in a fictional language. For the first time in his career, he was tasked with performing dialogue in mermaid tongue. Despite practicing phonetic spellings ahead of time, the process proved unexpectedly difficult during recording sessions.

Looking ahead, Cockle will soon return to the world of *The Witcher* in *The Witcher 4*, though this time Geralt takes on a supporting role to Ciri, his adoptive daughter and the game’s protagonist. With significantly less dialogue to record, Cockle expects the experience to feel more relaxed than previous entries. He also supports the creative decision to shift the narrative perspective, calling it an exciting and logical evolution for the franchise.

While details about *The Witcher 4* remain under wraps, Cockle expresses enthusiasm about what CD Projekt Red has planned. He believes the change in perspective opens up new storytelling possibilities, particularly inspired by events in the original books.
