Ghost of Yotei Set in Hokkaido For Its Sense of Danger and Beauty

Sucker Punch, the developers behind Ghost of Yōtei, have unveiled their reasoning for selecting Hokkaido as the primary setting for the game. Dive into the details of how they recreated Hokkaido and the insights gained from their visits to Japan.

A Sense of Authenticity to the Fictional Depiction of Real-Life Places

Ghost of Yōtei continues Sucker Punch's tradition of integrating real-world Japanese locations into their game, with Ezo (modern-day Hokkaido) taking center stage. In a PlayStation Blog post dated May 15, Game Director Nate Fox detailed the team's decision to set protagonist Atsu's journey on the island of Hokkaido.

Sucker Punch has a proven track record of faithfully recreating actual locations, as demonstrated with Tsushima Island in their initial Ghost series title. Their efforts earned them acclaim from Japanese critics, and even led to Game Director Nate Fox and Creative Director Jason Connell being appointed ambassadors of the real Tsushima island for their cultural representation.

In 2021, Tsushima's Mayor Naoki Hitakatsu expressed his gratitude, stating, "Many Japanese are unaware of the Gen-ko period's history. Globally, Tsushima is largely unknown. We are deeply thankful to Sucker Punch for bringing our stories to life with stunning visuals and deep narratives."

The team's aim was to honor Tsushima's essence, a principle they carried forward into Ghost of Yōtei. Their goal for both games remains, "To deliver a feeling of authenticity and believability to our fictional story."

For Ghost of Yōtei, Hokkaido was chosen for its "unbelievable beauty and its position as the edge of the Japanese empire in 1603." Fox emphasized that this dramatic setting was perfect for introducing Atsu's tale of vengeance, showcasing the impact of her actions on her reputation. He added, "If you’re going to tell a ghost story, do it in a dramatic location."

A Perfect Marriage of Beauty and Danger

Fox revealed that the team embarked on two research trips to Japan to immerse themselves in the culture and setting. One highlight was their visit to Shiretoko National Park, a place where natural beauty and the lurking danger of wildlife coexist.

This blend of serene landscapes and inherent risks encapsulated the essence they wanted for their game. Fox remarked, "A perfect marriage of beauty and danger, that was the exact feeling we wanted for our game. For me, that was the moment I knew Hokkaido was the right choice."

Another significant visit was to Mt. Yōtei, known to the Ainu as "Machineshir" or "the Female Mountain." The Ainu, indigenous to Hokkaido before modern Japanese settlement, hold deep reverence for the natural world and consider the mountain sacred. For the developers, Mt. Yōtei symbolizes Hokkaido and, for Atsu, the family she lost.

Fox shared that the entire experience on the island, engaging with locals, and generating new ideas, made the trip immensely rewarding. These journeys allowed Sucker Punch to "capture the spirit of it in our fictional version of the island." Acknowledging their initial unfamiliarity with Japanese culture, they are committed to further learning and representation.

As previously announced, Ghost of Yōtei represents Sucker Punch's most ambitious project yet, generating significant anticipation among fans. The game is set to launch on October 2, 2025, exclusively on the PlayStation 5. Stay tuned for more updates on this exciting title by checking out our related article below!
