NIS America Speeds Up Western Releases of Trails and Ys Games
Faster Falcom Games on the Horizon
Exciting news for JRPG enthusiasts! During the recent Ys X: Nordics digital showcase, NIS America's Senior Associate Producer, Alan Costa, confirmed the company's dedication to streamlining the localization process for both the Trails and Ys franchises. Costa highlighted Ys X: Nordics (released recently) and Trails into Reverie II (slated for early 2025) as examples of this improved efficiency. While he couldn't detail the internal changes, he emphasized the significant reduction in release times compared to previous titles.
The substantial reduction in the release timeline for Trails into Reverie II, despite its September 2022 Japanese release, demonstrates a marked improvement. Historically, Western releases lagged significantly behind their Japanese counterparts, sometimes by a decade or more. This delay was largely attributed to the sheer volume of text requiring translation.
The challenges of localizing these text-heavy games were previously highlighted by former XSEED Games Localization Manager, Jessica Chavez, who described the immense workload faced by small translation teams.
While NIS America aims for faster releases, Costa stressed the importance of maintaining high localization quality. The balance between speed and accuracy remains a priority, as evidenced by past delays caused by translation issues.
The recent, well-received release of Trails into Reverie II signifies a positive turning point. This faster release, coupled with positive fan reception, suggests a brighter future for NIS America's localization efforts, promising quicker access to these beloved RPGs for Western players.
