The Live-Action "Like a Dragon: Yakuza" Adaptation: Actors' Unconventional Approach

The lead actors of the upcoming "Like a Dragon: Yakuza" live-action series, Ryoma Takeuchi and Kento Kaku, made a surprising revelation at San Diego Comic-Con: they hadn't played any of the games in the franchise before or during filming. This deliberate choice, according to the actors, stemmed from a desire to approach their roles with fresh perspectives, unburdened by preconceived notions.

Takeuchi, speaking through a translator, explained to GamesRadar+ that while aware of the games' immense popularity, he consciously avoided playing them to allow for a clean slate in interpreting his character. Kaku echoed this sentiment, stating their aim was to create their own version of the characters, drawing inspiration from the source material's core themes and spirit while forging their own unique interpretations.

This unconventional approach has generated a mixed response from fans. While some express concern that the series might stray too far from the source material, others argue that the actors’ unfamiliarity with the games isn't necessarily detrimental. The omission of the iconic karaoke minigame from the show further fueled these anxieties.

The debate mirrors similar discussions surrounding other video game adaptations. Ella Purnell, from Amazon's "Fallout" series, highlighted the benefits of immersing oneself in the game's world, noting the positive impact it had on the show’s reception (65 million viewers in two weeks). However, she also emphasized the ultimate creative authority resting with the showrunners.

Despite the actors' lack of prior experience with the games, RGG Studio Director Masayoshi Yokoyama expressed confidence in the vision of directors Masaharu Take and Kengo Takimoto. Yokoyama described Director Take's understanding of the source material as that of an original author, highlighting the potential for a unique and engaging adaptation. He emphasized that the actors' portrayals, while distinct from the games, are precisely what makes the adaptation exciting, offering a fresh perspective on the already well-established character of Kiryu. The goal, Yokoyama stressed, wasn't mere imitation, but a bold reimagining.
