From Dungeon Maker to Innovative Gameplay

The genesis of Echoes of Wisdom stemmed from Grezzo's post-Link's Awakening (2019) assignment to explore the future of top-down Zelda gameplay. Initially envisioned as another remake, Grezzo proposed a bolder concept: a Zelda dungeon maker. Several prototypes emerged, including one with a "copy-and-paste" mechanic and another blending top-down and side-view perspectives.

Aonuma's intervention, a "tea table upending" in Nintendo parlance, significantly altered the project's trajectory. While appreciating the initial ideas, he saw greater potential in utilizing the copy-and-paste function as a gameplay tool rather than a pure dungeon creation system. This led to the innovative "Echo" mechanic, allowing players to creatively manipulate objects.

The "Mischief" Factor: Embracing Unconventional Solutions

Sano explains how the "Echo" mechanic allows players to, for example, use a Thwomp enemy from Link's Awakening in unexpected ways. Initially, the team grappled with imposing restrictions on Echo usage to prevent exploits, but ultimately embraced the freedom and unconventional solutions it allowed. This led to the development of a guiding principle: "being mischievous." This philosophy, documented by the team, emphasizes creative and unconventional gameplay solutions.

Aonuma draws parallels between this "mischief" and the Myahm Agana Shrine in Breath of the Wild, showcasing the value of unexpected solutions and secret tricks.
